Having had a few weeks to settle in, we caught up with new signing Reggie Young just over a week into the pre-season training programme. The former Woking and Farnborough lad can’t wait to get back playing. “It’s been good to finally get back out there and play football after so long out. I’m enjoying It and just can’t wait for the season to eventually start.
Despite only being 21, the skilful forward provides much needed youth, energy and pace to the side but how has he settled into the group? “Everyone’s been great. We are still getting to know each other but there’s a good mix between young and senior players which is a good thing. In terms of training, the coaching staff have definitely put us through our paces in recent training sessions. I made sure I was fit before coming in as I was aware Lee wants us to be fit. It’s clear that he has big expectations for us and the season ahead but the training has certainly been enjoyable.
Having spent a couple of seasons at Farnborough, it was clear from when we first met Reggie how determined he is to show what he can do at this level. His work rate in training has also shown the coaching staff how hungry he is to do well for the club. “I’m just really excited to get going and play for the club. We have a good group of players, coaching staff so I know it’s gonna be a good season. I’m sure the fans are excited to see us all play as it’s a different team to last season. I can assure them we will try to do our best and finish as high as possible in the league.”
Although all the players are itching to get going, the difficult circumstances we find ourselves in globally has impacted the new season. Around the ground, clubhouse and within training, players have had to adapt to meet the COVID-19 safety protocols. Despite this, there are still plenty of things to look forward to once it’s safe to return.
“The last game we had was in the middle of March before it was all stopped so it’s been unusual going back so late. But when the time is right I can’t wait to get started especially playing on the new pitch. We have a lot of technical players so I know it will suit us with how we want to play. Pre season is always tough but especially with the situation as it is, but once it’s over, we’ll be in the right shape to give the league the best shot we can.
