History of The Angels

When founded in 1947, Tonbridge Angels first played their home matches at The Angel Ground, formerly known for being the home of Kent County cricket club. Whilst leasing their ground, the club was placed into the Southern League shortly after being formed, and would play their first ever fixture in front of a crowd of 5,000 against Hastings United. A slow start to life in the Southern League, Tonbridge Angels would then find themselves relegated from the Premier Division in the 1961/62 season. Eleven years later in 1972/73, The Angels would find themselves back in the Premier Division, finishing runners up to Maidstone United.

The Gaffer - Jay Saunders

Manager of The Angels, Jay Saunders, has been with the club for three seasons, being appointed in the 21/22 season after a brief spell in management with Margate in 2018/19. As well as Tonbridge and Margate, Saunders has managed local Kent rivals Maidstone United. In his current reign with The Angels, the 45-year old led his side to a mid-table finish in 2023/24, and most noticeably and ninth place finish in 2022/23, narrowly missing out on the National League South play-offs.

Lets ride this storm together and get back on form! See you in Tonbridge tomorrow troops!
